A diagram by Jake Coolidge imagining what the BART system could look like if it, you know, actually connected all of the Bay Area.

It would at least be more comparable to the reach of the NYC and Chicago subway lines, without (somewhat unfortunately) being nearly as crazy as the Tokyo Metro.

#1 Palo Alto, #10 Oakland (?!) - Best Places to Live (in the West)

I don’t agree with Palo Alto being seated being the top contender, but Oakland ranking #10?! Considering it came in ahead of Portland and that SF is nowhere on the list, that’s pretty awesome. It’s nice to see Oakland getting some recognition for its foodie turns.

From the article:

Oakland’s surprise standing is credited to being a hot spot of a food revolution including a trend in urban homesteading. Urban homesteading is when people turn their backyards into mini farmland for the raising of chickens and such.

Small Bay Area Coffee Roasters Spread Out

…as well they should. Roasters like Blue Bottle, Ritual, Sightglass, Four Barrel and Intelligentsia should be household names. Great coffee should be a right, not a privilege.

SFpark: dynamically-priced meter parking based on real-time demand. Launching in Summer 2010.

I think I’ve run through $100 in quarters for city parking meters in the last year. I’m looking forward to this.

And, since we’re on the topic of “future now,” if I could also get a real-time predictive model of how likely nearby drivers are to beat me to an open parking spot, I’d quite like that too.
